Honeysucker amplifies the captivating essence of city nightlife in "Headed for a Dive."

asonginlife

City-dwelling indie-rock act Honeysucker's new EP heralds the epitome of their distinctive sound, taken to yet another level— it's a classy throwback to vintage punk rock layered with soul and jazz-fusion. "Headed for a Dive" is opulent yet frisky, as the band captures the fleeting moments of life during the small hours through the six tunes, demonstrating a superlative knack for musicality.

In the midst of 2023, the suave quartette set up shop with the debut "Honeydeux": now carrying thousands of streams, the funky rock tune with dreamy slices of grainy guitars and occasional synth riffs successfully came together in a hypnotic indie-pop affair; this here is a demonstration of what they label as "Land Locked Yacht Rock," a style inspired by 70s soulful rock with the flair and experimentation of modernistic indie (which in itself is vibrantly eclectic). Based in Brooklyn, they are in charge of all facets— recording and production included. This explains their authentic and singular take, which further strikes out in their latest project.

A self-indulgent opening from "New Dust" takes the lead: the buoyant drums and decadent songwriting best describe a drug-induced euphoria ("Now reach into the goody bag/And grab yourself a treat"). The following tune "Loneliness" reflects on solitary desperation, alternating between contemplative moments and cathartic outbursts. The instrumental, much like its predecessor, contains a lush company of Rhodes and gritty, melodic guitar riffs.

The minute-long interlude titled "Frida Kahlo" (a stomping, sleazy hip-hop beat blares during its playback) leads into the punk-rock snippet "Buzzcut Girls," seedy and biting with its disposition. Surprisingly, the next track "BQE" is earnestly and unabashedly romantic, a peachy soft-rock ballad complete with a glimmering and silky ambiance. By the finale "Lost" we are back to a faster metronome, with sarcastic songwriting aided by twangy and fluttering guitars with a streamlined rush of bassline and zippy drums.
