Not placing much belief in the rustic and bucolic nature of indie-folk, and creatively free-flowing over to other verdant musical styles, "Redbud" from Gina Sobel is not short of a hypnotic experience, as various instruments commingle in streamlined and attention-grabbing performances. The EP demonstrates a superlative touch in instrumentality, as the songstress makes it ever so soulful and immersive with her involvement.
Gina's onset in the music industry was marked by the first album "Seed of the Street," an Americana and folk-centered album released in 2011. Her musical catalog is decked with several EPs and albums— which freely traverse between blues, soul, and jazz to culminate a discography brimming with experimentation. The vocalist took a pivot to other genres in the brilliant live-performance album "Mighty Live"; a seminal work that captured her passion for musicality, sonic trademarks that thoroughly seeped into later releases. Among her notable works, "Netflix and Jam" (2018) has amassed thousands of rotations from online streamers, as the tune intertwines frolicking flute melodies with syncopated, rhythmic, and borderline disco. Simultaneously, "Gotta Go" is a pensive ballad from 2016, capturing our attention with its luminous guitars and heartbroken vocals.
A multi-instrumentalist besides handling the singer-songwriter aspects, Gina has used a medley of different sounds to evoke a hypnagogic soundscape in "Redbud," including flute, sax, and bass flute. Listeners are drawn instantly into a relaxing company of sultry Jazz arrangements in the opening titular track; pensive piano chords, pedal steel guitar, and soothing flute melodies (a constant ear-candy making an appearance through the EP) all kept us riveted as the melodic, wistful vocal performance is interspersed— letting the isolated composition cast its serene magic. "Florida Ave" picks up the pacing, nevertheless supplied with chiming pianoforte, and entirely instrumental in its conduct, headlined by a funk-embracing guitar rendition. Next in the line-up is "Try Again Tomorrow," a soporific folksy tune that incorporates waltzing guitar riffs with supportive, sparse drum rhythms— meanwhile, the singing is ever so thoughtful and yearning, beautifully complemented by the flute in the backdrop.
Over at "East Colorado," the songster has a sultry but thoughtful timbre, enriched by glimmering notes of Rhodes and mild percussions; a beautiful throwback to 70s soul and blues ballads. The finishing act "The in-between" is a nod at jazz-fusion, vintage soft-rock; easy on the ears, it operates on a supple orchestration and anxious lyricism offered by amply lush vocals.
